Tips on the new stereo VR lens and some post-prod tips

Hi Maxwelllians, here is a recording of the webinar I did on how to use the new stereo Lat/Long lens in 3.2, and also a few tips on the new .PSD output and post production.

VR is really taking off, with sites like Vrideo specialized in showcasing immersive 360 videos, and youtube also announced recently that it now supports stereo VR videos – so posting your VR animations is a snap. You can also buy the cheap Google Cardboard for viewing stereo VR and new high resolution consumer oriented head mounted displays (HMDs) will appear in 2016. It’s safe to say it would be a wise decision for anyone in the business of visualization to start offering 360 immersive tours and animations as part of their services.

As mentioned in the webinar, you should visit the site of Andrew Hazelden for lots of info and tips on creating VR content. He is also the developer of PlayBlastVR, an application that uses the GPU for rendering your viewport into a stereo VR format, which is very useful for quick previz of how your animation will look in VR. It works for Maya and Softimage. He’s also the co-founder of Dover Studios, where he works as a visual effects artist and trainer.

One thing I forgot to mention in the webinar is that if you wish to upload your 360 videos to youtube, you have to add a special piece of metadata to it, so youtube knows it’s a 360 video. Whether it’s a 360 “normal” video, or a stereo one doesn’t matter – the same metadata will be used. To add it to your videos, youtube has a simple application which you can use.
